INTERDIFFERENCE

Interdifference, 1-11-2000, Time, Amsterdam. Real HipHop in a for HipHop unusual place to be: the Time, on a for HipHop in Amsterdam unusual day: Wednesday. Interdifference is a series of jams focussing on a for Amsterdam unusual part of the HipHop scene: French, Brazilian, Italian, Spanish and Japanese HipHop! This first episode was all about the French scene.

A lot of unusual stuff, but that makes it even more interesting! Even though I was (still) suffering from this fall's heavy flu, I love French and Spanish HipHop so I just had to go check the party out.

This episode the French scene was represented by 2 MC's from Paris: Roce and Madan. I was in Paris last week to check out some records and jams and t hese names didn't seem familiar to me. But, since Paris is such a mighty big HipHop city, there must be good MC's out there without record deals or gigs. Roce and Madan rocked the Mic in a couple of sessions, in French, off course , but were a bit dissappointing. They told Dr. Jay they were not really used to perform. In Paris HipHop jams in small clubs like these are not common, because they always turn out into fights. The music was taken care of by DJ Karz from Paris and DJ Y.Boogie from Lausanne (Fr.). Amsterdam was represented by Suez, who brought a lot of HipHop classics to spin.

Not just the DJ's were spinning. A lot B-boys were doing their thing, too. The Illusionary Rockers were representing and there were some B-boys and B-girls from Amsterdam as well. The guys from Rotterdam were kickin' ass! At one point a battle broke out and some real fresh moves were made. Windmills, Turtle Hops etc. The breakdancers were definatly the ones that brought the atmosphere in the house.

Interdifference concluded all 4 elements so the graffiti wasn't missing: there was work from Echo, Dr. Jay and Sender, a graff slide show and on the big screen behind the MC's video's about train destructionz, incl. Dirty Handz 2, were shown. Nice, nice, nice.

The night turned out to be a little bit underground. Few people showed up. I think the Wednesdays are not the best days for a party (and Amsterdam is so spoiled with so many HipHop parties for such a relatively small city...) But I had a great time, especially meeting a friend I hadn't seen in 13 years. Interdifference has all the ingredients that should make a good party: good flyering, a special, or different, line up than most other jams, a decent soundsystem and the joint itself is somehow aaight (but don't drink too much beer there 'cuz they charge Fl 1,= for the toilets…)
