The Hague HipHop

July 1st marked the day the first big HipHop event in The Hague would go down after the people in The Hague finally got the green light to organize a HipHop event in broad day light. And not inside a building but like any other major festivities: outside on the Spui Plein, next to the town-house with it's sparkling bright white walls. Euhm risky, though.

This all meant more public which in its turn meant that the artists, not only rappers, but also the people representing the other 4 elements of HipHop, would be seen by more people. And as always events like this will get a subvention, but as Diversity of Coup deVillz told me: "We've been trying to get up an event like this for years". But as y'all know, the government is always trying to economize on happenings that won't fatten their own pockets (read: commercial events, particularly industrial events), once again verifying the common consent that Dutch people are greedy fucks.

Anyway, the event took place from 12:00 till 23:00 hours. At the left side of the stage there was a wall for the graffiti artists to do their thing. In front of the stage there was a little space reserved for the b-boys and girls. If it hadn't been for the bad weather conditions they could have used this 'floor'. The rain probably prevented a lot of heads from coming through but still there were a lot of heads representing. The acts on stage included Surveillance, Haagse Bluf, Headliners, Crystall Clear, Second Chamber, Sores, Magicall Madness, Coup deVillz , The Group, Goldy Locks, Supreme Court (a Hip Hop collective consisting of above mentioned groups). Unlike the sun, these artists got their chance to shine, and did just that freestyling, battling (for example Reggie Lines vs. Skinny Scotty), but unfortunately the sound-system didn't quite live up to the potential of the artists. DNG of Coup deVillz saw how a soundman disappeared. When he walked to the sound board to ask the soundman to do his work properly, only finding he went away, later the word was that the oundman tried to stop the Police from pulling the pluggs.

In the end of the afternoon the pieces by the graff artists were almost finished which gave the site a doper sight then before… The MC's and DJ's always kept the crowd busy, if not rhyming over instrumentals they were hyping the crowd up with battles or classic jams. It's nice to see how tight and well-organized the HipHop scene in The Hague is. And al though I never heard of most of these crews before coming to the event, I will go check them out next time as should you…
