Da Bounce
Comedy Night.

Amsterdam 14-10-1999. Nieuwe De La Mar Theater. Maybuse Entertainment presented for the seventh time Da Bounce Comedy nights featuring comedians (from Def Comedy Jam) Shawn Cornelius, Barbara Carlyle and James Stephens 3rd. They started to bring over English and American standup comedians answering a big and long demand for comedy nights which we could identify with. Every time it was sold out in the past and even on Saturday they held an extra showcase.

With a blueprint of what they are going to say, sing and do they interact with the crowd. So feel free to scream, interrupt or sit in the front rows. I had the chance make some really good close ups, but I was smart enough not to come near any artist with my camera, knowing for sure I would been have victimized if I did so. Of course everybody is welcome but do keep in mind that it’s handy when you understand English, have a multicultural background or at least know a little bit what is happening outside your front door.

This time we had at last a chance to get some press tickets and go there. Esther hooks up with me and we enter. Not on the guest list but Evelyn Fraser of Maybuse takes us in. "These are with me", she said. Esther: "Yo AQ, you keep on repeating it. Stop that!" Kinda was impressed by the beautiful Miss Fraser and she saying that I’m with her was good for my ego.

After a warming up in Dutch by the host first up was Shawn Cornelis from Queens, New York. Shawn: "I was chilling backstage, not understanding a word what the host was saying, suddenly I hear my name and I have to go on stage." He did a good show about sex, relations and sex. Performed a special love ballad made for his love that broke up: ‘F. U. C. K. U.’ Showed us how to fuck on classical music. And did remark the crazy politeness the English have. But could not understand why they used ‘wancker’ when they were calling him names. Shawn: "Yes I do, hell yeah I am!"

From Georgia, Barbara Carlyle was up. Her show was not as good and strong as the shows of her male counter parts. Did sing a lot including the help of three ‘volunteers’ from the audience. The material of her was about lonely women who can’t sleep. Barbara: "When counting sheep jumping over the fence you imagine that it are cocks and you want grab them with your mouth and suck them." With a background as teacher she did some good routines about pupils. Kids had to make a sentence with fascinate to get an A. "So Johnny stands up: ‘My mother bought me a video about something she knows that fascinates me." O.K. Cool, he got an eight." Sandra stands up: "My mother bought me a jacket with nine buttons but I could only fasten eight." "That was the moment I did quit!",-Barbara. "Once I walked in the classroom there was this red apple on my desk and the letters F.M.T. written on the blackboard. Barbara: "What does this F.M.T. mean?" "This white boy Johnny stood up and said ‘For My Teacher". The next day the same thing happened with two apples and an Asian kid. The third day: "I walked in my classroom and on my desk was a big water melon. On the blackboard there were the letters F.U.C.K. written. Barbara: "What the hell does this mean?!" "So a black kid stood up: ‘From Us Colored Kids’.

In the break of five Surinam minutes we had a chance to go to the toilet, have a drink and regroup. After fifteen minutes we were back for the headliner: James Stephens 3rd. A little bit tired of all the sex he gave some fresh and more original material. "We do are homophobic. But I do have many gay friends… And when they come out of jail I’m out of here." His show had the most variety. Where Barbara did a song with three ladies from the crowd he took two men. To do a Temptations song although all the women did back up Barbara with vocals , only the tall man did try to help James with singing. He could not move that smooth and really could not sing but it was hell of fun. He took even the mic for a solo trip. From homo’s to Reagan to ya mama’s. The most wicked part was when he performed Snoop Dogg’s Gin and Juice in Country style with many other songs.

It was great, it was fun and it was healthy for your laugh muscles. Next time, 14 and 15 December, you see us near the front rows with or without press tickets. Oh yes, James: "Your mother is so old that she was a waitress at the last-supper."
